The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
